Appointment of the Bishop of Garissa – Kenya

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation of His Excellency Bishop Joseph Alessandro, OFMCap as the pastoral leader of the Diocese of Garissa (Kenya).

The Holy Father has appointed Rev. Fr. George Muthaka, OFMCap as Bishop of the same diocese. He is currently the Vicar General of Garissa.

Curriculum vitae

Bishop Goerge Muthaka was born on December 28, 1974 in Ruiru, Kiambu County in the Archdiocese of Nairobi.  He completed his studies of philosophy at St. Bonaventure University College in Lusaka, Zambia (1996-99) and of theology at Tangaza University College in Nairobi (1999-2003). He made his perpetual vows on August 31, 2002 in the Order of the Capuchin Friars Minor and was ordained a priest on June 28, 2003.

Between 2015 and 2017 he obtained a Master’s Degree in Church Management at Villanova University (USA) and a Master’s Degree in Psychology at Divine Mercy University (USA).

He has held the following positions: Parish Vicar of Msabaha Parish in the Diocese of Malindi (2003-2007) and, at the same time, Coordinator of the Diocesan Office of Justice and Peace and Director of Caritas; Guardian of the St. Bridget Convent in Nairobi and Director of the eponymous pastoral complex (2007-2009); Provincial Vicar for two consecutive terms (2009-2015).

He has served as Vicar General in the Diocese of Garissa since 2017, as well as the parish priest (pastor) for the Cathedral, Diocesan Financial Administrator, Director of Caritas and President of the Diocesan Commission for the Protection of Minors.
